Rotary Club of CDO Premier Tackles Dengue Prevention and Education in Claveria with ‘Balik Eskwela’ Project

On September 9, 2024, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, in partnership with the Provincial Health Office of Misamis Oriental, the Rural Health Unit of Claveria, and the Pyramid Foundation, successfully conducted the Dengue Prevention and Balik Eskwela project at Aligodon Elementary School, Claveria, Misamis Oriental. Chaired by rookie Rotarian Jenalyn Morales, the project marked her first major initiative since joining the club.

The project was designed to address the recent rise in dengue cases in the area and across the Philippines. Majority of the families in the Aligodon community belong to indigenous groups, making the project particularly significant in providing much-needed support to vulnerable populations.

Key initiatives included the distribution of treated mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites, residual spraying around the school premises, and the provision of essential school supplies to the 87 students of Aligodon Elementary School. The distribution of these supplies aimed to help prepare students for their return to the classroom, ensuring they have the necessary materials for their studies.

The event was attended by Chairperson Jenalyn Morales, President Nielgem Beja, Immediate Past President Arrissa Navarro, new Rotarian Krestony Atay, and Past President Maybelle Quilnat. Their presence highlighted the Rotary Club's strong commitment to service and community engagement.

This project also aligns with September’s theme of Basic Education and Literacy Month, underscoring the club’s commitment to supporting education. This was the club’s third Balik Eskwela project for the Rotary year, reaffirming their focus on promoting education while addressing urgent community health concerns.

The collaborative effort between the Rotary Club of CDO Premier, the Provincial Health Office, and local health units underscores Rotary’s mission of "Service Above Self," while also contributing to the broader goal of community health and safety.

With the dengue outbreak affecting numerous communities, this project provided preventive measures and relief to a population at risk. The success of the Dengue Prevention and Balik Eskwela project is a testament to the impact that strategic partnerships and committed Rotarians can make in the lives of others.#
