Cagayan de Oro City, August 17, 2025 — The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, in partnership with the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) Department of Ophthalmology, successfully conducted the Barangay Health Workers Onsite Ophthalmologic Screening Training Program (BOOST) at the Barangay Session Hall in Barangay Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro City.

A total of 21 participants took part in the training: 15 barangay health workers, one barangay nutrition scholar, two school-affiliated teachers, and three daycare staff. The program aimed to equip community frontliners with the skills to perform vision screening and basic eye examinations, enabling them to identify potential eye conditions and refer patients to hospitals for proper treatment.

Ophthalmologists from NMMC led the sessions, which featured lectures, demonstrations, and interactive breakout sessions with return-demonstrations. Each participant also received a screening kit with tools to be used in their respective communities. A post-training evaluation was administered to gauge knowledge gained, and certificates of completion were awarded.

Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier Vice President Jena added a lively touch to the program with a surprise song performance, while participants enjoyed refreshments before the training concluded by lunchtime.

BOOST is part of Rotary’s continuing commitment to strengthen grassroots health care services and prevent avoidable blindness. Following the success of the Bonbon training, another BOOST project will be conducted in Opol, Misamis Oriental on August 29, 2025.
