Trivia Night for a Cause: Halloween Edition

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier of Rotary International District 3870 reached out this Halloween season to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio – a vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.

RC CDO Premier invited Cagayan de Oro City Philippines – the City of Golden Friendship to Trivia Night for a Cause: Halloween Edition on Friday, 25 October 2019 at ASL Cagayan de Oro City. Participants were asked to register in teams of 3 to 10 and pay an admission fee of ₱199.00 per person to play. The competition began at 7:00 PM and consisted of 4 rounds with 3 categories per round. Each category consisted of 7 questions. Trivia questions ranged from general information, history, geography, sports, science, mathematics, music, pop culture, etc.

The club also handed out fact sheets on the symptoms, the transmission, and the prevention of polio throughout the night. A total of 16 teams registered for the trivia challenge. Top teams were awarded prizes.

The Halloween Edition is the third installment of what has become one of CDO Premier’s most anticipated projects. Trivia Night for a Cause was first launched in 2017 with a fiesta theme. In 2018, they followed up with the Holiday Edition.

Trivia Night for a Cause: Halloween Edition was made possible by ASL Cagayan de Oro City, Amoré World of Travel, Pru Life UK Cagayan de Oro, 4LOOP, Velox Energy, Adessence Inc., Michelle Jangao, Star Ads, Technomart, Discovery Hotel & Restaurant Cagayan de Oro City, Seven Seas Waterpark, Dahilayan Adventure Park, Cenyu Whole Foods, Echostore Cagayan De Oro City, The Pink Box, K’s Beauty and Closet, the Greenie Box, Vill's Lechon, SkinRev, Mom's Pig Out, and Coco Bay. Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Rotary International for the benefit of the PolioPlus campaign.

The issue of ending polio has become all-important to Rotarians of District 3870 (i.e. Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Camiguin Island, and Cagayan de Oro City) of late. The Department of Health (Philippines) (DOH) on Thursday, September 19, declared a polio epidemic after it recorded a case of the disease in Lanao del Sur. This is the country's first confirmed case after 19 years of being polio-free.

Eradicating polio worldwide is Rotary International's top philanthropic goal. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to just 33 cases in 2018. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million per year over the next three years in support of global polio eradication efforts. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation will match Rotary’s commitment 2:1. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.

Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.
