Taking Root: A Tree Planting Project

Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon—In response to Rotary International President Ian H.S. Riseley’s challenge to plant a tree for every member, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier launched “Taking Root: A Tree Planting Project”. The project, the club’s first environment-centered activity, was held in Barangay Mambatangan on Saturday, 23 September.

In his address to the 2017-18 class of district governors, Riseley lamented that though environmental degradation and global climate change are serious threats that affect everyone, they rarely register on the Rotary agenda.

“The time is long past when environmental sustainability can be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern. It is, and must be, everyone’s concern,” he said.

Taking Root was attended by members of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, their families, and local volunteers. The club closed the project with a celebratory luncheon. A total of 60 trees were planted.

Premier will continue to address the concern of environmental sustainability on 22 April 2018. They will join 45 other clubs in District 3870 and over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide in celebration of World Earth Day.

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, chartered in 2015, is one of the youngest clubs in Rotary International District 3870. Members are young business persons and professionals who meet weekly on Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. at Sentro 1850, Don. A. Velez Street in Cagayan de Oro.
